This was taken on a hike in Johnston Canyon shortly after our wedding in Canmore! I love spending time with my family and hiking is one of my favourite pastimes! I was very excited to take my daughter on her first hike. It turns out she loves it as well!
We are only 2 weeks into our summer holidays, but I’m already so excited about September that I could hardly sleep last night!
This is going to be the blog my grade 3 class uses this year to share what we are learning and connect with other classes that are also online. I thought I’d start us off with a little about myself.
My name is Melinda Hanson and 2013-2014 marks my tenth year teaching. I am excited to return to the third grade this year and couldn’t ask for a better school to be teaching in! I have spent 4 years at Oriole Park so far, and this will be number 5!
I have a husband (Jesse), a daughter (Faith), a dog (Sprocket), and a new kitten (Peaches). We also just moved in to a new house! Well, new to us at least - it needs a little TLC but is well worth it!
I love spending time outside when the weather is nice, especially in the mountains. I admit, I’m not much of a winter girl, though I do enjoy cross-country skiing on a mild day. I love camping and taking Faith to Gull Lake in the summer. Photography has been a hobby of mine for a number of years as well and I love looking at the world from different points of view.
In addition to teaching at Oriole Park, I am also involved in organizing the super-fun videos and activities we do as a part of our Me to We theme. The Kielburgers have been a huge inspiration for me over the last few year and if you have a chance to read any of their books, it will be well worth your time! I often shop at the online Me to We store when buying gifts, and encourage others to make donations or purchase gifts that make a difference for families and communities in need.
And finally, the Oriole Park Drama Club! My husband and I started this project at OP three years ago. We both have a love of theatre and have delighted in seeing what drama has been able to bring out in so many of our students! The Drama Club is designed for grade 4 and 5 students, and every year we have between 60 and 70 kids! It’s been a huge success so far, in part because of the fantastic support we’ve received from our school’s Parent Council and the staff at Oriole Park. We’ve explored Robert Munsch, Greek plays, dance routines, singing, video creation, and most recently performed “Twisted Fairy Tale Theatre”, which showcased 6 Fairy Tales with a twist! Many of our Drama Club students go on to explore Drama in middle school as well, and we love hearing about all the younger students who can’t wait to join Drama Club when they get to grade 4!
It’s nice to meet you! Please check back in September to meet my students!
